The Lumia 900 is built tough and does not require a protective cover. The unibody case is injection molded, which eliminates ugly seams and hides dings, gouges or other signs of weather because the color is not simply painted on – it is the actual color of the plastic. Additionally, the screen is finished with shatter-resistant Gorilla Glass. Our only durability-related complaint lies with the somewhat scratch-prone metal plate over the camera lens.

Measuring just over 5 inches long and 2.7 inches wide, this Windows Phone 7 device hovers right on verge of being too large. It may seem oversized for delicate hands, and it can be obnoxious in small pockets, but it really just comes down to personal taste. We think it will be comfortable for most people, but you should be prepared for an adjustment if youre accustomed to a smaller phone. It is one of the thicker phones on our lineup, but it still comes in under a half inch. It is very sturdy and easy to grip, which is a good thing – the last thing you need is a sudden smartphone casualty from an unexpected fall .

The Lumia gets big points for the bold look. Smartphones have gotten more and more similar with each passing generation, and its great to see a phone that manages to make a statement in the midst of conformity. The cyan and white versions are attractive alternatives in a sea of shiny black slab phones. If you dont want the bold look, Nokia also offers the phone in a handsome black color. Other enticing design elements include the sharp corners and tapered edges, which contrast greatly with the river-stone look of most competitors. Be warned, however – these edges can be uncomfortable if they settle the wrong way in your pocket.

Everything looks bolder on the Nokias AMOLED screen when compared side by side with other phones The colors are so bright that they almost cross the line between vivid and oversaturated – its a delicate equilibrium, but the Lumia pulls it off. The screen also strikes a good balance between size and pixel density, measuring 4.3 inches diagonally with 217 pixels per square inch (ppi). You can get better pixel density on other phones, but not with such a large screen. There are two small drawbacks to consider as well – the screen is not as smooth to the touch as other smartphones, and it is more vulnerable to fingerprinting than some competitors.
